What is presbyopia? Presbyopia, also known as ‘old-age reading blur’, is a condition of the eyes in which close visual acuity is lost due to the stiffening of the lens and the ciliary muscle.  (This is the circular muscle around the lens that causes it to change shape to see clearly at different distances.) It commonly begins around age 40. 

The symptoms of presbyopia are typically corrected by the wearing of magnifying lenses for close vision. When corrective lenses are used consistently this can also often lead to a loss of distant vision and the need for bifocals.
